How water gets into a wall and what it does to drywall
Drywall is a gypsum core wrapped in paper, and it holds water like a sponge. Dried quickly, many wall sections recover. Left wet, or soaked by dirty water, the paper feeds mold, the core crumbles and the joint tape lets go. We dry, open and clean the wall and coordinate the patch and paint.
The water usually comes from a leaking supply or drain line inside the wall, a failed fitting at a fixture, or water that traveled from a neighboring room. A licensed plumber repairs the pipe. We do not fix plumbing, and we can work alongside your plumber so the wall stays open until the line is sound.
What you see on the wall and what it means
| What you see | What it often means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Bubbling or blistering paint | Moisture is pushing behind the paint film | Meter the wall and look for the source |
| Brown ring or yellow stain | A leak that dried and may have wet again | Meter around the stain, find the source |
| Soft or crumbly spot when pressed | The gypsum core has broken down | Usually cut out and replace that section |
| Joint tape lifting or seams showing | Paper tape lost its bond from moisture | Meter, then dry or cut out |
| Rust streaks near a pipe or fixture | A fitting or drain is leaking into the wall | Plumber fixes the cause, then meter the wall |
| Musty smell with no visible damage | Water is trapped inside the cavity | Thermal imaging and a small inspection hole |
First-hour wall safety: outlets, switches and the shutoff
Wet wall near wiring
If water is running down a wall with outlets, switches or a panel, keep away from it. Cut power at the panel only if you can reach it on dry ground. If you smell gas or see sparks, call the utility or 911 before anyone else.
Close the main water valve to stop a supply leak, and keep children and pets off wet floors. Do not drill or cut into a wet wall yourself, since wires and pipes sit behind it.
Meter readings decide: dry in place or cut out
A wall can look fine and still be wet inside. The crew reads an unaffected wall for a baseline, then maps the damaged one with moisture meters and a thermal imaging camera.
Dry in place
- The water was clean and the wall was caught quickly
- The paper face is intact and the board is still firm
- Readings fall toward the baseline during drying
Cut out
- The board is swollen, soft, crumbling or delaminating
- The water was contaminated, which calls for the water damage cleanup process
- Mold growth or a musty cavity is already present
- Insulation inside the cavity is saturated

How a wet wall gets opened and dried
ANSI/IICRC S500 is a published industry reference for professional water damage restoration, and you can ask any company how it applies the standard. Our wall work follows the same drying logic described on the structural drying page.
Protect the room
Floors are covered and baseboards lifted so the wall base can breathe.
Mark and cut
A straight cut line goes above the highest wet reading, with margin, and the cut is checked with the meter.
Remove wet material
Soaked drywall and insulation come out, and studs are left to dry.
Dry the cavity
Air movers and LGR dehumidifiers run, with cavity drying through baseboards or small holes where the wall stays closed.
Clean and treat
Antimicrobial application goes on framing where needed, then meters confirm the wood is dry.
We take calls from nearby towns, so a wet wall in Paramount or Downey gets the same line and the same process.
Plaster walls, patching, texture matching and paint
Older homes often have plaster pressed over thin wood strips called lath. It is thicker than drywall, dries slowly and cannot be cut and patched like a gypsum panel, so the crew decides from readings and cracks.
Patching starts only after the cavity reads dry. New drywall is hung, taped, mudded and sanded, and the texture is matched to the old finish.
Primer and paint follow, and painting corner to corner hides the patch best. If the work touched plumbing, electrical or structure, ask about permits before the wall closes.
What changes the cost, and how insurance fits
- How many wall sections are wet, and how tall they are
- Whether the water was clean or contaminated
- Drying days and equipment needed before the wall closes
- Texture, paint and trim work to match the room
- Plumbing or electrical work by licensed trades, billed separately
Sudden and accidental water damage is often covered, while gradual leaks and neglect often are not. Check your policy or ask your insurer. We keep moisture readings and dated photos for your claim. Rebuild beyond the wall is on our water damage repair page.
Mold behind walls and mistakes to avoid
EPA mold guidance says to dry or discard wet materials within 24 to 48 hours to limit mold growth. That window is why a wall should be metered quickly. If the cavity has stayed wet longer, see our mold remediation page.
Wall mistakes to avoid
- Painting over a stain without finding the source
- Sealing a wet wall with new boards or paint
- Pointing a hair dryer or heater at a wall
- Waiting for the wall to dry on its own
Wall repair in South Gate's older homes and permit rules
South Gate notes for wall repair
The city's Wikipedia history says much of South Gate was built between 1910 and 1940, and many early homes were owner-built. Plaster over lath is common in homes of that era. Tell the crew your home's age and ask about testing paint and plaster before demolition.
The city's Building and Safety Division can confirm whether your wall repair needs one. The same page lists plumbing and electrical improvements among the work that typically needs a permit, which matters when wiring or pipe runs inside the wall you are opening. If your wall has rewired outlets or rerouted pipes behind it, call before the wall closes.

Wall and drywall water damage questions
Yes. The 24/7 line is answered around the clock, every day. Same-day visits depend on crew availability, and no arrival time is promised. If water is still flowing, close the main valve first.
Often, if the water was clean, the wall was caught quickly and the board is still firm. A meter confirms it. Soft, swollen or contaminated drywall is cut out.
Above the highest wet reading, with margin, so the cut edge reads dry on the meter. The crew checks before removing anything.
No. A licensed plumber repairs the pipe. We dry and open the wall and can work alongside the plumber.
Matching texture, primer and paint carried across the whole wall hide it well. Old plaster takes more care.
It depends on whether the leak was sudden or gradual. Check your policy or ask your insurer.
