Why a pipe under the concrete floor becomes a water damage problem
A slab leak is a leaking water pipe that runs in or under a concrete slab foundation. The water cannot drain away, so it rises through cracks and joints, soaks flooring from below and can creep under walls. A licensed plumber finds and repairs the pipe. We extract the water, dry the floors and structure, and coordinate the rebuild.
Many Southern California homes sit on concrete slabs, but nobody can tell you how many South Gate homes do. Check your own foundation. If you can crawl under the floor through an access hatch, you have a raised foundation, and the crawl space water damage page covers that case instead.
Signs the water is under your floor
| What you notice | What it may mean | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Water meter dial moves with every tap and appliance off | Water is leaving the system somewhere | Write down the reading, wait, check again, call a plumber |
| A warm spot on a tile or wood floor | A hot water line may be leaking below | Mark the spot, keep the main closed, call a plumber |
| Flooring cupping, lifting or feeling damp | Moisture is coming up from the slab | Call us for moisture readings, and tell your plumber |
One sign proves nothing alone, because a running toilet can also move a meter. A plumber confirms a slab leak with detection tools.
Slab leak emergency: what to do right now
Close the main water valve
Turn it fully off where the line enters the house or at the meter.
Check the meter
With every tap and appliance off, see whether the dial still moves. Photograph it.
Lift belongings off the floor
Move rugs, boxes and furniture off wet or warm areas.
Call a plumber and our line
The plumber fixes the pipe. We plan extraction and drying around that work.
Photograph everything
Dated photos of wet flooring and the meter help any claim.
First-hour safety: power, hot floors and who to call
Water, electricity and gas come first
If water is reaching outlets, floor boxes, the panel or appliances, stay out of it. Cut power at the panel only if you can reach it while standing on dry ground. For a gas smell or any electrical risk, call the gas utility or 911 before you call us.
A warm patch on the floor can mean a hot water line is leaking, and that water can scald. Keep children and pets off it.

Who fixes the pipe, and what we do about the water
We do not repair plumbing. A licensed plumber locates the leak, then repairs or reroutes the pipe, which may mean opening the floor or breaking into the slab. We handle the water damage and can work alongside the plumber so the order of work makes sense.
The first-hours work is described on our water mitigation page. ANSI/IICRC S500 is the published reference for how restorers classify and dry water losses, and you can ask any company how it applies the standard.
- Extraction units pull standing water off flooring and carpet
- Moisture meters and a thermal imaging camera map where the water traveled
- Drying mats and air movers dry hardwood, laminate and underlayment
- LGR dehumidifiers pull moisture out of the air
- Baseboards come off so the base of each wall can dry
Concrete holds water and releases it slowly, so readings guide the work and not the calendar. The drying visits are described on our structural drying page, and standing water gets the emergency water removal treatment first. We take calls from nearby towns such as Lynwood and Compton.
What changes the cost of slab leak cleanup
- How long the leak ran before anyone noticed
- Square footage and rooms of flooring that got wet
- Flooring type: carpet and pad, laminate, hardwood, tile or vinyl
- Whether the water reached walls, cabinets or the next room
- Number of drying days and pieces of equipment in use
The plumber's repair is quoted by the plumber and is a separate bill. Our crew explains the scope of the water damage work before it starts.
Slab leaks and your insurance policy
Insurance rules differ by policy. Sudden and accidental damage is often covered, while a gradual leak or long neglect is often not. A slab leak can be slow and hard to date, so ask your insurer how it treats damage found under a floor.
Water from a broken pipe is a plumbing loss, not a flood. Ask whether your policy also pays to reach the pipe, because policies treat that differently. We keep moisture readings and dated photos you can pass along. For flood questions see flood damage restoration.
Mistakes that make a slab leak worse
Avoid these
- Waiting to see if the water bill drops by itself
- Sealing a damp floor with new flooring or paint
- Cutting or drilling into the slab without a plumber
What a slab leak means in a South Gate house and its water system
South Gate notes for slab leak cleanup
Wikipedia's city history says South Gate incorporated in 1923 and filled farmland with homes and factories mostly between 1910 and 1940, with many early homes owner-built. Older houses can carry older piping and flooring, so tell the crew your home's age and ask about testing materials before demolition.
The City of South Gate's 2021 Consumer Confidence Report, its city water quality report, lists total hardness of 226.3 mg/L, in a range of 200 to 250. Hard water leaves mineral scale that can stiffen old shutoff valves. That does not show it causes slab leaks, so ask a plumber about pipe condition, and turn your main valve once now. The water operations number printed in that report, (323) 563-5796, reaches the City side.
Golden State Water Company's website puts South Gate and Hollydale in Central Basin West, with its customer line staffed 24 hours at 1-800-999-4033. Your water bill shows which provider is yours. Find your provider's name and number on your water bill before you need it.

Slab leak emergency questions
Yes. The 24/7 line is answered around the clock, every day. Same-day service is offered where a crew is available, and no arrival time is stated.
You cannot be sure without a plumber. A moving meter, warm floor spots and damp flooring are strong hints, and a plumber uses detection tools to locate the pipe.
No. A licensed plumber repairs or reroutes the pipe. We extract the water, dry floors and baseboards and coordinate the rebuild, and we can work alongside your plumber.
Sometimes. Hardwood and laminate can often be dried if caught early, while carpet pad is usually replaced. Moisture readings decide.
It depends on the materials and how long the leak ran. Concrete dries slowly, so we measure at each visit and do not promise a number of days.
It depends on your policy and on whether the leak looks sudden or gradual. Check your policy or ask your insurer, and keep photos and readings.
